Recommended Props
By Lucas Rockwood
You do not need any special props or equipment to practice with us. Basic items around your house are just great. If you do decide to purchase equipment, please know that almost all the items we use are available at very low cost.
NOTE: we have no affiliation with any of the recommendations below, and in all cases, there are other brands and options that might suit your needs or budget better. Choose whatever you like.
Yoga Mat
Yoga mats come in all thicknesses and styles. Some people prefer very cushiony mats, other like them to be thin and firm. I often recommend people read online reviews and purchase the mat that suits them best.
Yoga Belt
Yoga belts are very long and have a simple buckle that makes them easy to use. However, a belt (from your closet) or a strap from your garage can work just as well. Do not buy expensive yoga belts, they are just the same as cheap ones. For pull poses, if you do not have bars or ceiling hooks to hang your strap/belt from, close it tightly in the top of a door. For hang poses, if you don’t have a bar you can use a sturdy doorframe.
Yoga Block
You’ll often see me using a cork block. They look really cool, but they are heavy, hard to clean, and they can flake apart. Traditional hard foam blocks are the most economical, lightweight, and probably the best choice for most people.
Stool or Chair
I often use a wicker stool in my videos (mine measures 45 cm high / 32 cm square on top). Despite its presence on camera, it’s not actually a great stool as the top is uneven. Ikea sells a very sturdy folding chair that works great and is much more practical.
Cushion
I have a couple of Ikea chair cushions. They are cheap, space efficient and versatile. At home, I prefer couch cushions as they are firm and large.
Resistance Bands
For bodyweight training, particularly upper body and pull-motion work, resistance bands are cheap, small, and very effective. There are short versions (about as long as your forearm, and long versions, about 3 feet long. I have no preference and use both interchangeably. A set will often include 3-5 different resistance strengths. You’ll find lots of options here – purchase based on reviews and price.
Hand Weights / Dumbbells
If you’re doing bodyweight training, it can be very handy to have some extra weight as you build strength. Hand weights can be purchased on Amazon and elsewhere, the problem is you’ll build strength quickly and will want more weights. If you’re serious about using weight, it’s worth the investment to purchase an adjustable dumbbell. Long term, they are cheaper, space efficient, and versatile.
