Does My Health Insurance Cover Yoga?
As yoga becomes mainstream, the hope is that health insurance plans will subsidize the cost of yoga memberships as part of preventative care. After all, a dollar spent on prevention of illness ends up saving insurers many hundreds if not thousands of dollars in the long run because healthy, happy clients are a win-win proposition for everyone.
So is yoga covered? Ten years ago, the answer was a definite “no,” but today, the answer is “maybe!”
Today, many health plans do include some coverage for alternative care such as acupuncture, chiropractic care or even massage therapy, but many still lump yoga into a category of “non-traditional treatments” that includes things like herbal therapy and naturopathy. That said, things are changing quickly, and many progressive providers will cover or subsidize yoga memberships – so be sure to ask for coverage, request it, and let’s help to make yoga more accessible to everyone.
Below, you’ll find a incomplete list of providers that offer rebates for clients partaking in various fitness activities including yoga. Requirements and restrictions vary based on provider. To learn more, visit the Yoga Alliance list of health plans offering rebates for yoga classes. And below you’ll find additional links and resources.
CAN YOU HELP? The above listings are nowhere near complete. If you know of insurance companies that cover yoga classes as part of preventative care that we have listed, please post below in the comments sections so we can expand the list.
